Born in London, he was raised in South Africa where he enjoyed a distinguished career in mainstream financial journalism before starting an internet publishing business above his garage in 1997.
He listed the pioneering company, Moneyweb, on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange during the Dot.Com boom, developing it into a global operation with interests in online, radio, television and print. Hogg left Moneyweb after 15 years and subsequently launched a re-engineered and highly disruptive business model through the creation of the successful Biznews.com which operates out of London and Johannesburg.
Before launching his entrepreneurial endeavours, in his early 30s Hogg was also exposed to executive management through running the television news input division at South Africa’s national broadcaster and then as a member of the top team at Africa’s largest retail bank. He also served as a director of leading horse racing company, Phumelela Limited, and, through Moneyweb, effected the rescue and turnaround of the Johannesburg-based Classic FM radio station.
Alec Hogg is a voracious reader who has always traveled often and widely in pursuit of lifelong learning. Since 2005 he has participated at the annual meetings of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland as a member of the Global Media Council. Hogg credits being exposed to these “five days of distilled wisdom” as a major reason for his ability to understand seismic trends reshaping the world.
He is also a devotee of the common sense investment and life beliefs of the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett, having attended the Berkshire Hathaway AGM in Nebraska most years in the past decade. Hogg’s latest book, How to Invest Like Warren Buffett, enjoyed favourable reviews and strong market acceptance. It was published in February 2016.
His most popular talk, “Tap Dancing in a Warp Speed World – How to flourish personally and professionally in a changing environment”, draws on three and a half decades of reflecting on global economic trends. Its message of hope resonates among corporate, conference and retail audiences.
The presentation provides perspective on seemingly confusing news headlines, offering practical ways for each of us to apply broad trends to advantage. An optimist, Hogg shares his well researched, deep convictions in a fun, uplifting manner.
Hogg and his wife Jeanette relocated to the UK in May 2016 to spearhead the global expansion of Biznews.com, which serves a community of 500 000 worldwide. He is active on social media with 32 000 Twitter followers; 25 000 Facebook fans; and 7 500 LinkedIn connections. His newsletter is read daily by over 30 000 subscribers.
The couple live in Surrey with two Jack Russell terriers. He serves on the board of Scouts SA.
