Andre Arendse
I
helped my club (Cape Town Spurs) achieve the
National Soccer league title as well as the BobSave
Superbowl Cup.
In
1996,
I
won the African Cup of Nations title playing for
South Africa.
I
hold the South African record for going 8 games in a
row (+- 600 minutes) without conceding agoal for
Bafana Bafana between 1996 and 1997 A record that
still stands and unofficially second in the world
behind the former Italian great goalkeeper, Dino
Zoff.
In
1997,
I
was selected to represent the continent of Africa,
where an African team played an exhibition
match against a European team.
Later in 1997,
I
was selected by a FIFA panel to play in the FIFA
all-stars team against an Asian select team in Hong
Kong.
This
particular game was played in honour of the hand
over of Hong Kong which was still under the British
rule at the time.
Upon
leaving Hong Kong, I was requested to travel
directly to England, where I joined Fulham Football
Club in London.
In
1998,
I
was selected to represent Bafana Bafana in the
coveted World Cup in France. My dream was
never-the-less shattered, when I ruptured a
cartilage in my knee thus forcing me to have an
operation and withdraw from the Bafana team.
All
this occurring 1 day before our opening game against
the host nation, France. |
