Andriette Norman - Pop and Solo Musician - Cape Town
She had
the country at her feet in the fourth Idols
series. With her incredible voice and strong
performances, Andriėtte was the proverbial
iron fist in a velvet glove. Even Mr Nasty
himself, Idols judge Randall Abrahams, gave
her his stamp of approval by saying that she
was the best singer ever to enter Idols.
And with her debut album, Diamant, Andriėtte
is proving that she is without a doubt one
of the best voices ever to come out of South
Africa. The album is predominantly
Afrikaans, but there are also a handful of
English hit songs as part of the strong song
list. |

"Most of the Afrikaans songs were written
for the album by well know songwriters like
André Swiegers and William Loots. We also
did a new jazzed-up version of the Anneli
van Rooyen hit song Neem My Op Vlerke. I am
sure people are going to love the album,''
says Andriėtte. "I haven't had any negative
remarks or comments and that's a good sign!"
Hoekom Bly Jy Staan (Napoleon) was written
by Steve Hofmeyr and was recorded for the
first time for this album. "It is one of my
favourites on the album," says Andriėtte.
"It is about a woman who always stands by
her man no matter what. Steve said he is
very proud of me and very happy with the
recording. I am a huge fan of Steve and it
is an honour to sing one of his songs."

Storm in
My Hart was written by Munro du Toit who was
also a finalist in Idols. "I asked him to
write a song for the album. He usually
writes in English, but wrote this song in
Afrikaans specially for me. It is my other
big favourite on the album."
Andriėtte co-wrote Nou dat Jy Weg Is with
Junior Botha. "It is a song about a break-up
but is a bit spiteful as this song tells how
life is better after the break-up!"
She describes the music as country rock and
there is a good mix of up-tempo dance tunes
and strong ballads. A Suzi Quatro medley and
Alannah Myles' Black Velvet are some of the
English hit songs getting the special
Andriėtte treatment. |
Andriette Norman
"I really enjoyed recording the album. I
loved being in the studio and hearing every
sound that was being recorded. The music on
the album is my kind of music. There is a
good variety and something for everybody to
enjoy. The sound is new and exciting and I
believe people will embrace it."
She has big dreams for the album. "I hope it
goes gold. It is my first album and I
believe it will be a success. And if this
one is a success, the ones to follow will be
even better."
Some of the musicians in the studio with
Andriėtte were Juan "Floors" Oosthuizen,
Andrew Roos and Jasper van Rensburg. The
producer is Junior Botha.
It is sophisticated and for an audience who
enjoys quality music. "I am really excited
about it," she says.
With Diamant Andriėtte is no doubt going to
prove that she is everything but an
unpolished diamond. |
