Cherry Vinyl - Band - Cape town
This Cape Town based band started out in May 2008,
premiering onstage at the V&A Waterfront shortly
following their establishment. With the support of
manager J.P. de Klerk it wasn’t long before Cherry
Vynil was playing consistently at many other area
hotspots, like Long Street’s Zula Bar and Jackson
Hall at Grand West Casino. The band is honored to
say they have shared the stage with South Africa’s
beloved Freshly Ground at the V&A Waterfront in
December 2008.
The band also takes pride in the opportunity they
received to perform at the Klein
Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK) 2009 among many
other prestigious
and respected South African musicians. With an
abundance of local and national
venues on their music resume, Cherry Vynil has no
limits on their performance
flexibility and is always looking for new venues and
audiences.
Hugo van Niekerk , The beat of the band found
himself behind a set of drums at the early age of
10, playing for his church on Sundays. Living in a
small town with nearly no drumming resources around
hardly posed a problem for Hugo, though, as he
taught himself to be a well-adept percussionist over
the course of time. He stayed faithful to his
drumming career
with the church band for 10 years before leaving to
England once he finished school. There, he took up
studying guitar at the Guitar Institute in London. |

After exploring the UK for two years Hugo returned
to South Africa and studied sound engineering at
Cape Audio College, graduating in the top three of
his class. With genres blues and rock reigning over
his music preferences, Hugo looks up to drummers
like Buddy Rich, Steve Jordan and Carter Beauford
(of the Dave Matthews Band).
While he may be the softest spoken of the group,
Hugo radiates a sweet demeanor and a cool, collected
stage presence. According to Hugo, who often
references music for life insights, playing the
drums is much like living: the more you do it, the
better you become. Hugo plans on playing music—and
living—indefinitely. |

Marchant van Wyk, A thoroughbred Capetonian, this
health-guru band member must be eating something
right to be able to play the bass guitar like he
does. Marchant studied at the University of
Stellenbosch where he received a Bachelor’s degree
in Sports Science. He continues to work in the
health field today mainly as an aerobics and fitness
trainer, and also a part-time masseuse.
Though he began his relationship with music on the
acoustic guitar at age 16, the now 25-year-old rocks
the bass guitar as if he knows nothing else—smooth,
skillfully and undeniably charged with passion. His
interest in music extends vastly beyond his own
band’s tunes, however, as Marchant harbors a mindful
of music knowledge. With a deep interest in and
awareness of music (especially South African music),
the bassist keeps an open mind and open ears to all
sounds young and old, far and near. |

Vickus Horne, For a guy who can now be found
humming, strumming, bobbing, or tapping at almost
all times of the day, Vickus’s connection to music
was muted for many years by a different passion for
performance: acting. He first picked up a guitar at
age 19 just before commencing his theatre studies at
Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, South
Africa. Once he was infected with music, though,
there was no prospect for recovery.
Vickus continues to act with a professional agency
in Cape Town but focuses on deepening his knowledge
of music, from studying guitar part-time with jazz
guru Alvin Dyers, to constantly indulging in the
many live sounds and vibes the Western Cape has to
offer. Vickus is also the music director and youth
leader at Corpus Christi Church. His biggest musical
influences are the Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer,
the John Butler Trio, and Counting Crows; all jazzy,
jiving, and straight from the heart, Vickus’s
biggest goal as a musician is to produce music as
authentic and soulful as that of his idols. |
