Chix with Stix -
Instrumental, Drums, Function Band and Party Band -
Johannesburg
There is a preconceived idea that girls can’t drum,
but Chix with Stix have eliminated that thought from
any skeptics mind forever. Initially attracting
audiences purely out of fascination, Chix with Stix
now has a solid fan base that is constantly growing.
The band started in Feb 2004 and the members are
Rikki Brest, Stefania Stefani, and Anastasia Ferrara
and not only do these three girls aim to make a name
for themselves in the music industry, but also to be
respected for what they do.
Chix with Stix
Chix with Stix became a group in February 2004. They
met and formed while attending the same College,
"Performing Arts Campus". They started as a project
within the College, and when they realized their
love for it, they decided to become an independent
group.
Chix with Stix now consists of three girls, Rikki
(22), Stef (22) and Anastasia (22). They started to
develop as a group, growing to a flexible set in
which they not only drum, but have also amalgamated
tap, drumming on chairs, djembes, singing and more.
This is all subject to the type of events as well as
the venues where they perform. Being an all girl
group, with different backgrounds, it is sometimes
hard to control three different mood swings, but
once they got through the cat fights, they have
grown as friends making the creativity process
stronger.
Although
they have all learnt to write drum music, they
prefer the spontaneous approach, and while jamming
something comes and "bites us in the ass". They
prefer to go on "feel", rather than structured sheet
music, because they believe the beat of the rhythm
is in your heart, not written on a piece of paper.
Chix with Stix
Despite the pre-conceived idea that girls can't
drum, and the fact that they have had the audiences
purely to see if they can, they are happy to report
that they have all left the gigs impressed. The
group's goal has always been to enjoy what they do
while opening the skeptical minds of a number of
audience members.
They aspire to make a name for
themselves, be respected for what they do, and make
an impact on SA music. Although they all have
different influences, they strive to create their
own unique sound. Candy has been fired from the
band.
Chix with Stix
What makes them unique? Well, the first thing that
is noticeable about them, is that they are all
female. What makes them unique is not only the fact
that they drum, but the rhythms created are
thunderous.
Their show appeals to a wide audience, allowing them
to perform from corporate, to clubs, parties,
schools and many other events, which is a great
marketing tool.
