Damien served as a Clearance Diver and Special Operations Sniper in the Australian Defense Force. Whilst later deployed in Iraq, he Project Managed the Iraq Special Police Training Academy. Following three years in Iraq, he left the military in 2008 with no direction in life. A trip to Africa in early 2009 awakened him to the horrors that the natural world is facing, in particular the horrific criminal poaching which threatens the survival of rhinos and elephants. Liquidating his personal assets from his time in the military, he founded the International Anti-Poaching Foundation in order to protect some of Earth’s the most aggressively targeted species from poachers.
With a mission of ‘wildlife conservation through direct action’, IAPF focuses on training and leading anti-poaching rangers to stand between nature and those that seek to destroy it. Just as special forces operate outside the scope and capabilities of the regular military, the IAPF is Mother Nature’s elite unit.
7 years later, and with the likes of Dr Jane Goodall as their Patron, they have a presence in 5 countries, run 3 major campaigns, and have supported over 45 other conservation initiatives with investment up to the value of $50k. The rangers they have helped support protect over 5 million acres everyday in Southern Africa.
IAPF has been featured on 60 Minutes twice, Voice of America, Discovery Channel, TEDx (twice), Animal Planet, National Geographic Magazine, Good Weekend Magazine, Reddit AmA, The Project, Australia and Africa Geographic Magazines, British Airways Highlife, Christian Science Monitor, Carte Blanch, Al Jazeera, ABC, Forbes, The Sunday Times, Chicago Tonight and the UK Daily Telegraph.
