Dr Mzukisi Qobo

 

As a corporate strategist, Mzukisi has advised corporates on strategy and public affairs across sectors such as finance, telecoms, and mining. He also gives keynotes on themes related to political trends, geopolitics, shared value, and leadership. Mzukisi led a team that developed a policy advisory report on illicit financial flows, focusing on improving transparency in beneficial ownership, for the South African government in 2018. He has also developed the International Relations Strategy for the Department of Small Business Development. Mzukisi sits on the board of Corruption Watch and is director at Tutwa Consulting Group.

Mzukisi co-founded the Center for the Study of Governance Innovation (GovInn) at the University of Pretoria and became its deputy director between 2012 and 2014. He has also had a stint as deputy director at the NRF-funded South African Research Chair on African Diplomacy and Foreign Policy, at the University of Johannesburg, where he taught courses on International Political Economy, Foreign Policy and Political Risk Analysis.

Mzukisi is Associate Professor at the Wits Business School, where he is also Director: PhD Programmes. He is a corporate strategy advisor and an expert on strategy, geopolitics, and public policy. Mzukisi serves on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Economic Advisory Council.

In the past Mzukisi held a position as Chief Director: Trade Policy at the Department of Trade and Industry where he developed South Africa’s trade policy. He was later Head: Emerging Powers and Global Challenges at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA).

He has also written for the Business Day, the Daily Maverick, and the Sowetan newspapers as a regular columnist; and featured in interviews with international media, including Bloomberg, Reuters, Al-Jazeera, CNN, and BBC. Mzukisi obtained his PhD from the University of Warwick, United Kingdom; MA from the University of Stellenbosch; and BA from the University of Cape Town.
