It is already the middle of the year and we’ve seen some amazing acts so far. Let’s recap some of these astonishing events.

It is worth noting that early in the year South Africa received great applause for our very own rendition of The Color Purple. We’ve read the book, seen the film adaptation, with the award winning Whoopi Goldberg as the lead character, and now we’ve seen a theatrical version in our very own, South Africa. It was a musical and debuted actress Didintle Khunou, who played the lead role of Celie Johnson. The event was applauded for its music, the acting skills displayed by the actors as well as their American accents.

In addition to the above, March saw the 2018 SAFTA event and some of our greats were rightfully honored.

  • Thuso Mbedo – Best Actress in a TV Drama
  • Jo-Anne Reyneke – Best Actress in a TV Soap/Telenovela
  • Puppet Nation – Best TV Comedy
  • Lerato Kganyago – Best TV Presenter
  • Crystal-Donna Roberts – Best feature Film
  • Johan Stemnet and Thoko Ntshinga – Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The above list is by no means whole. Many more of our stars were awarded and we couldn’t be prouder.

April saw the Never Ending Train in Kwazulu Natal. This is a day event in which ten top class comedians, along with our beloved comedian, Darren Maule, fill up ten cabins, which amounts to around 400 people, and entertain them on a round trip to and from PMP. The event ends with a buffet of food in which guests can fuel up for lunch and socialize with some of the comedians and fellow guests. This was the third year The Never Ending Train embarked on their journey and tickets sold out each time. Check out dates for next year. Tickets sold at R500.00.

April also saw the GHOEMA Musiek Toekennings 2018. The event is equal to that of the Grammy Awards and South African Music Awards. However, this one is dedicated to Afrikaans artists. Jo Black was nominated for seven awards, of which six were for his song Skepe. Further nominations are as seen below.

  • Steve Hofmeyer – Public’s favorite male artist of the year (translated)
  • Juanita du Plessis – Female artist of the year (translated)
  • Die Huewels Fantasties – Group of the Year (translated)
  • CH2 – Insomnia – Best Instrumental Album (translated)
  • Chris Chameleon – Best Solo Songwriter (translated)

More of our favorite stars were awarded. Please see the GHOEMA awards’ official website for a detailed list of winners.

Early May experienced the unique Come(dy) Dinne(r). This is a comedy event that started with dinner and ended with great comedy entertainment. The event was entertained by award winning comedians Kedibone Mulaudzi, Eugene Khoza and Simmi Areff. The event was held at The Protea Hotel in Midrand and promised an unforgettable experience.

The above mentioned events is just an overview of some of our South African events until now, and we are extremely proud of all our nominees and winners of awards as well as the astonishing performances at each one of our major events, whether named above or not. In addition to what’s past, here’s something to look forward to.

The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival is coming up and we are more than excited about the upcoming weekend event. Local and international legends will be seen at the event as it celebrates its 21st anniversary. It is an indoor event, which will take place in Sandton, Gauteng, 27 and 28 September.
