Hog Hoggidy Hog -
Punk, Rock and Reggae Band -
Cape Town
In the early 90's, George, Sean and Robin Porkchop played in a
little band called Leviathan. Their music was a
mixture of thrash, ska, punk and reggae. The young
lads all thought that they were being incredibly
original by mixing these musical styles together. So
much so in fact that when they first started
discovering bands like early Mighty Mighty Bosstones,
Murphy's Law and Nofx, they were quite surprise that
there were other bands on the planet that were
making the same music as them. Ok, maybe this view
was a little naive, but it was before the internet
was widely available here. Whatever the case. This
sound that was experimented with back in the
Leviathan days would lay down the blueprint of what
would eventually become Hog Hoggidy Hog. |

So the night of the first gig arrived – The band arrived as ready
as they could be after only being together for such
a short time, but with all the excitement of the
up-coming gig, the guys realised that they had
neglected to come up with a band name. So there they
sat a few hours before their debut show with no name
and not much time to decide on one. Since all the
guys had come from bands that went by the name of
things such as Leviathan and Decimated, they were
all in agreement of having a band name that was a
bit more light-hearted and that didn't take itself
too seriously. Finally they whittled their choices
down to two names - The Dingleberries, which George
and Amos were in favour of and Hog Hoggidy Hog, with
which for some Godforsaken reason unbeknownst to
man, Sean & Peter liked. Hog Hoggidy Hog was Sean's
idea for a name and he was completely adamant about
it. When the vote in the band reached a stalemate
George pointed out that Sean was very rarely adamant
about anything so they should let him have his way.
Thus the band became known as Hog Hoggidy Hog. |

The Hogs quickly developed somewhat of a cult following and after
being together for just a few months they were
already banned from a few clubs because some
enthusiastic fan(s) decided to decorate the Western
Cape by spray painting Hog graffiti all over the
place. Well as they say, there's no such thing as
bad publicity and the band soon caught the attention
of local independent record label boss, Hennie La
Grange of Way Cool Records. Way Cool offered the
Hogs a record deal and it seemed like a dream come
true. |
Hog Hoggidy Hog
Where to from here? This seems to be the burning question on
everyone's lips, and after 14 years, the Hogs show
no sign of slowing down whatsoever. The band have
stated on numerous occasions that they aren't going
anywhere until they stop enjoying what they are
doing and if you've ever seen those Hogs on stage,
their energy alone is testament to the fact that
this is highly unlikely to happen any time soon.
There's talk of more tours, more albums, more this,
more that... but the reality of the matter is that
we're just going to have to wait and see how the
next chapter unfolds in the life and saga of Hog
Hoggidy Hog. |
