MC - Johannesburg
Keith Joshua

Keith.J was born in Durban, South Africa in 1974. He comes from a very musical family and started his career at the tender age of 5 years old (1979). His dad taught him the Elvis Presley songs like Jailhouse Rock and Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. So Keith had to learn very quickly how to impersonate stars.

He then flourished in his school life performing in every concert that was available at the time. He sang, acted and danced his way through school, winning many competitions and the hearts of all who saw him perform.

He grew in this industry to a point where his talents helped pay his way through University, as his parents could not afford his tuition fees. His family supported his choice of studying the arts during a time when it was unheard of an Indian kid becoming anything outside a teacher, lawyer or doctor. He successfully graduated with an Honours Degree in Film, Theatre and World Music studies from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UDW).

He got involved in the struggle against Apartheid at University (1993-1996). He wrote and performed music and drama that propagated freedom and equality for everyone in SA.

As a ragga-rapper in the early 90’s, he performed at the University’s concerts with Bayete, Brenda Fassie, The Village Pope, Boom Shaka, Mdu, Arthur and most of the Kwaito stars of the 90’s. Keith chose the Ragga Rap style as it incorporated many linguistic styles from various cultures, including his own Indian background. He also mimicked Shabba Ranks, Shinehead, Snow, The Stuntman, Beenie Man, Snoop, Dr Dre, Jamal Ski and Apache Indian, a very well known India born Ragga Rapper. It was difficult to produce his own album, so Keith used backtracks of other international hits to work his way in the industry.

Keith moved to Johannesburg in 1999 and after many years of struggling to record, he released a song “Envy, Jealousy, Temper, Pride” which hit Number 1 in Durban’s Highway Radio. He then secured a deal with Brettian Records in 2003, and released a full album called Keith J: Out Of Context. This was a mix of Hip Hop, Ragga, Reggae, House and Gospel. He launched the CD in Chambersburg, USA whilst performing with Out Of Eden. He then toured many venues in SA and his song “Tell Me Why” received airplay on Metro FM. He used the CD as a tool to impact the lives of many people with positive and inspiring lyrics.

Johannesburg also opened up many doors for Keith in the TV and Film industry. He focused more in this industry in the following years whilst doing music gigs on the side.
