Khumo Theko is a researcher and trend spotter at Flux Trends. In just two years, she has developed the skills needed to identify new trends and use them to compose credible, informative observations to help steer businesses through an ever-changing world. Her successful trend observations include Generation M and an introduction to Generation Alpha. These resulted in considerable business and media interest from the likes of 702, Power FM and local Islamic broadcaster ITV, as well as a presentation at the ABSA Experience in 2017.
Khumo has assisted with the compilation of Flux’s trend presentations like the New Rules of Retail, Zeitgeist 2018, the State We’re In: Through a Different Lens and The New Urban Tribes //2018 Edition. From this involvement, Khumo has developed an understanding of the methodology required to spot and define innovative, disruptive forces in various sectors and the consequent opportunities for businesses.
She further developed her skills in trends writing while co-authoring the New Urban Tribes 2018 edition: Consciously Diverse report. She has also taken on the role of speaker, co-presenting presentations with Dion Chang at the Flux Trends Open Sessions in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.
Khumo’s previous jobs helped form her view of the African creative economy. As a contributor to the South African creative portal, Between10and5, she realised the importance of developing Africa-based content. Her position as a production manager at South African fashion house Naked Ape gave her exposure to the unique opportunities the continent has to offer.
Both experiences would later inspire her online content hub titled, I See Africa, which unpacks the African zeitgeist in the creative and knowledge economy. This has added another layer to Khumo’s understanding of trends in various sectors.
