For celebrated South African actress Kim Engelbrecht, it all began with her swimming skills. In 1992, when Kim was just 12 years old, she won the lead role in Sarahsara, a film based on a true story of a Sudanese girl who swam 35km to her salvation.
The swimming part of the audition was easy Kim recalls, but “I was so nervous when we had to read for the part that I started crying but everyone thought I was fantastic!” And she’s been going with the flow ever since.
After matric, Kim was working at a local gym when she auditioned for and got the role of presenter on Craz-e, etv’s flagship kids entertainment show. In 2000 Kim got the opportunity to become a Take 5 presenter on SABC 1. Kim explains, “Becoming a Craz-e presenter was the beginning of a dream come true and I didn't even know it"
But Kim loved the educational aspect of Take 5 so much that she stayed on the show for four years. During this time, Kim had started to take a keen interest in going back to her first love: acting. Being the natural that she is, in 2002 Kim landed the role of Lolly in one of South Africa’s leading soapies, Isidingo. This year Kim took home the 2010 South African Film and Television Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Lolly.
Skilled at multitasking -" You never know what your calling is, until you give everything a good go. " Kim also began to perform stand up comedy. She wrote and performed on the hit sketch comedy show, Pure Monate Show (PMS) and got a role on the cop drama, Zero Tolerance.
Having achieved household name status, Kim’s film career skyrocketed. In 2004 Kim was committed to celluloid when she played a prostitute in Twist and appeared in 2005’s The Flyer. Directed by John Barker, Kim and her PMS friends starred in the urban comedy, Bunnychow. In 2009 Kim co-produced her first comedy show, Mind The Gap, which caters especially for stand-up comedy lovers in Cape Town and plans to produce more
