Martin Jonas - Comedian and MC - Johannesburg
Martin Jonas was discovered at South Africa's first
real comedy club, Hysterix in Johannesburg and has
impressed audiences with his novel style and
pertinent observational humour, ever since. Martin
is South African to his fingertips and was one of
the few performers to receive a standing ovation at
the inaugural ‘Smirnoff Mule Comedy Festival', at
the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town in 1997. |

Martin Jonas
Is Jonas rude? Oh, sure. Is he funny? You better
believe it. But there is a striking depth and
intelligence to his dialogue that leaves you feeling
this boytjie from Kempton Park is destined
for big things.
Incidentally, his impersonations of famous people
are a treat. My guess is that if there had been a
contest to impersonate president Nelson Mandela,
Madiba himself would come second to Jonas!

Martin Jonas
Martin Jonas is the proverbial new kid on the block
– the boytjie from Potchefstroom via Kempton
Park is part of the fresh-faced future of comedy in
South Africa. Discovered at South Africa’s first
real comedy club, Hysterix in Johannesburg, Martin
has impressed audiences with his novel style and
pertinent observational humour. He is South African
to his fingertips and was the only performer to
receive a standing ovation at the inaugural Smirnoff
Mule Comedy Festival. |

Martin Jonas
Martin was subsequently invited by Mr Comedy – Joe
Parker - to appear as support act on his first
Farewell Tour – his reputation since growing
significantly, resulting in his selection by M-Net
to compere their ‘It’s a funny country’
special in 1998. Martin, whose show is presented in
English and Afrikaans and covers practically all
aspects of the South African lifestyle has since
become hugely popular at the new Hysterix club in
Hatfield in Pretoria. |
Martin Jonas
His show is delivered in both English and Afrikaans
and covers just about all aspects of the South
African lifestyle.
Although Martin has many a memorable name to
attribute his influence, locally, John Vlismas and
Joe Parker are to thank for his comedic inception.
Stand-up comedy is the most direct route he has
found to connect with an audience.
“Comedy happens when you want to be an accountant
AND a rock star”, he says. |
