I am Okgonne Maloka, a 25-year-old from Pretoria dabbling in Mechatronics; HR; Microbiology; IT (soon) and –more relevantly— Public Speaking. That last activity was first cultivated by my late grandfather in my first year of primary school, and it’s a muscle I continued developing, right into the corporate world, which I’ll explain next.
Back when I was accepted into the BMW SA Mechatronics Learnership programme my managers quickly noticed my knack for public speaking and graciously gave me the platform to speak as a Master of Ceremonies at our resident annual Learnership Graduation event later on in my first year. From that success I was subsequently given the mic to speak at our other events, which sometimes boasted our CEO, a few Board Directors, and General Managers as audience members. Aside from my orator accolades from High School, these are my greatest –and perhaps fondest— public speaking experiences. That said, I keep wanting to push beyond my last performances.
While remaining very grateful for all of the amazing above mentioned experiences and exposure, I am at a place where I feel my public speaking development has (in a sense) reached the glass ceiling, developmentally: I want to take what I have and start using it in a professional capacity, reaching wider audiences and covering a broader array of event topics. I’ve come to realise that all the pre-show nerves, audience interactions, and post-event reviews of my work are more than just part of the show, they’re a direct extension of my passion for this art, and I know—for sure—that I would be doing myself a huge disservice if I do not pursue it further…
