Ruda Landman grew up in small towns in the Northern Cape, the daughter of two school teachers. She spoke only Afrikaans, and went to university on a teaching bursary which meant that she had to either teach for the number of years she studied, or else repay it.
She completed a degree in Afrikaans and English (though her accent was so broad that her only English-speaking friend asked her to rather speak Afrikaans to her), and then decided teaching was not her preferred profession.
Ruda was born in Hartswater in the Northern Cape and was educated at Hartswater Primary School, Parow Central Primary, Keimoes High School and Upington High School, where she spent her final school years as a boarder. After matriculating she entered the Civil Defence College in George where she undertook voluntary military service for a year in one of the first women's army camps in South Africa.
In November 1977, she married JP Landman and begun her career as a TV newsreader in 1983. Her hobbies include reading, movies, spending time with friends over good wine and good food and she, like many other South African women, belongs to a monthly book club. Ruda has one son, Johannes Petrus.
Ruda Co hosted the Carte Blanch Show with Derek Watts between 1988 – 2007.
