In 2009 he performed live on 5fm first with Zubz, then performing a live 1 hour mix that was heralded as one of the best and certainly most musically diverse sets ever played on the station.

Brad Tapinos aka. THA CUTT is now officially South Africa’s no. 1 scratch DJ! After successfully defending his 2008 SA DMC crown at the recent 2009 national SA DMC finals, Tha Cutt remains the undefeated SA DMC Champion, and will be jetting off to London in September to represent South Africa at the World DMC Finals, an honour reserved for only the world’s top turntablists. 

While retaining his DMC crown, the two time champion earned the title of being the MTV Base official scratch DJ for 2009! Tha Cutt’s years of practice and working his way through the local scene have finally paid off, and he’ll be showcasing his skills for the entire continent of Africa and beyond, with regular showcases on MTV Base and live performances at MTV events.

His passion for music of all varieties has led him to be one of the country’s most diverse and versatile DJ talents, playing a wide array of genres from his trademark hip-hop sets, to old skool, funk, drum & bass, breaks, electro, pop,  acid jazz, trip hop, nu jazz, downtempo, and everything in between.  Known for his ability to read the crowd, and tailor a set to suit the occasion, effortlessly fusing genres, spiced up by spectacular displays of his turntablist craftsmanship, Tha Cutt always delivers memorable sets that define the boundaries of cutting edge.

His busy DJing schedule has seen Tha Cutt share stages with top internationals, the likes of Qbert, Jazzy Jay, DJ Woody and J Period (MTV), K’Naan, performing festivals and special events such as Woodstock, Fu-Cha Gathering, Sound Squad New Year Festivals, Redbull BC One afterparty, Lucky Fish Festival, Spring Break 2009, H2o ’09, Emily the Strange fashion show after party and Hip-Hop Indaba, with a long list of top clubs throughout the country too long to recount

Best known for his DJing abilities, Brad Tapinos is also producer and editor of the urban music magazine SPINDLE.

The project is available in two formats, the original VCD which is freely distributed through friends and fans of the Spindle Crew, and online clips available through portals such as YouTube. Under the guidance of Tha Cutt and founding partner and long time friend DJ Hamma, the project has grown tremendously over the years from its early inception where a few hundred copies of each Volume were circulated, to today where the clips have received over 30 thousand views online.  

The project started off as an information resource aimed at the local DJ scene, in which the crew would interview local and international music industry gurus, and produce features on relevant issues, all compiled into a VCD magazine. People were encouraged to share the resource with as many friends and colleagues as possible, and the popularity of the project skyrocketed. The content of the project was tailored to be of interest to music lovers in general, as opposed to only DJs, and has gathered great interest within the industry.

Keep an eye out for the next phase of the Spindle Mag project. Brad is currently completing his final year at AFDA, after which you can expect to see the film credits piling up as quickly as his DJing trophy collection.

Since being awarded the country’s highest DJ accolade 2 years in a row, it seems the sky is the limit for Tha Cutt, and with no signs of slowing down he certainly looks destined to become the hottest DJing commodity this country has ever seen. Watch this space!
