Trevor Manuel is the Deputy Chairman of Rothschild, South Africa.
Manuel was an activist and anti-apartheid leader, serving on the National Executive Committee of the United Democratic Front. His first portfolio was under President Nelson Mandela as Minister of Trade and Industry. He has served as a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress since his first election in 1991 and subsequent re-election in 1994, 1997, 2002 and 2007.
Trevor Manuel served as Governor of the Boards of the AFDB Group as well as the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA). He also served as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund and as Chair of the Development Committee of the World Bank. He was appointed as Special Envoy to the UNSG on Financing for Development in 2002 and 2008.
Trevor Manuel was previously Minister in the Presidency: National Planning Commission in the South African Government (2009-2014). He was Minister of Finance from 1996 to 2009 during the presidencies of Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Montlanthe. Prior to this, he headed the Department of Economic Planning established in 1991 by the African National Congress.
In 2010 Trevor Manuel was appointed by UNSG to the High Level Advisory Group on Climate Change Finance and to the Board of Directors of the Global Green Growth Institute. Mr. Manuel was selected the “Global Leader for Tomorrow” in 1994 by WEF and named Euromoney’s African Finance Minister of the Year in 1997.
