Waldorf String Band
-
String and Party Band - Johannesburg
Waldorf String Band was formed in 1987 and quickly
established itself as South Africa's premier Folk &
Celtic Music Band, having been compared favourably
with the Chieftains, and the Dubliners, with regular
TV and Festival Appearances.
Today’s line-up, still retains their rich folk
flavours, consisting of two original members of the
band - Rael Birns, Guitar, Vocals and Mouth Organ
and John Gnodde, Banjo, Mandolin, Guitar and Vocals;
together with Nippy Cripwell string bass; Jimmy
Smyth, flute and piccolo and vocals; and Alan Strang,
Guitar and Vocals. Whenever possible they are joined
by another of the original members, Iain McAlpine
(who now lives in the Shetland Isles), playing his
unique style of fiddle and mandolin. |

Waldorf String Band
Waldorf String Band started their recording career
in 1990 and by 2010 had released eight more CDs and
three DVDs including an annual release of their
‘Spirit of Christmas’ CD featuring well-known
traditional Christmas Carols.
In 2004, Waldorf String Band had enormous success
with their ‘Singalong Party’ CD, which took Gallo
Record Company and the dealers by surprise,
outselling the ‘boy’ bands for some time, and in
2005 after the release of the Singalong Party DVD,
Gallo released Waldorf String Band’s sixth CD and
second DVD ‘Best Of…So Far’ aimed yet again at the
‘forties plus’ market… again achieving huge success.

Then in December 2007, ready for release in 2008, in
celebration of their 21st Anniversary.
Gallo recorded a live concert at the Victory Theatre
in Johannesburg.
These
‘Deeply Middle Aged’ gentlemen are still at it 24
years later … proving over and again that music is
not just for the young… but for the young at heart …
of all ages… and in early 2010, Next Music released
‘Waldorf String Band in a Celtic Celebration’ on a
double CD set, also including material from the best
known Celtic artists such as Dubliners, Fureys,
Corries, and Foster & Alan, Clancy Brothers and
Planxty. |
