About David Cousins

David Cousins is professional jazz pianist, composer, arranger and musical director who graduated with a music degree (jazz studies) from the University of Cape Town in 2004. He continued his studies at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, developing his composition and arrangement skills further whilst playing and performing with music students from around the world.

Since returning to South Africa, David has performed with top jazz and pop artists such as Marcus Wyatt, Shane Cooper, Benjamin Jephta, Peter Auret, Timothy Moloi, Jonathan Roxmouth, Gloria Bosman, Kabelo, Lloyd Cele, Loyiso Bala, Graeme Watkins, Ard Matthews, Tarryn Lamb and Refentse Morake.

As an arranger and orchestrator, David has contributed orchestral and big band scores for Elvis Blue, Lloyd Cele, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Karen Zoid (among others) for festivals such as Skouspel, Jacaranda Pops, Starlight Classics and the Tshwane International Big Band Festival. His orchestral arrangement of Hugh Masekela's “Stimela” was performed by the Metropole Orkes for the 2022 BBC Proms concert: “The South African Jazz Songbook”. He served as the musical director and arranger of the corporate outfit Swing City, whose album Now Listen Properly (2017) was nominated for a SAMA award. His debut album Flight of Fancy (2015) featuring original jazz compositions in a traditional quartet setting, is out on all streaming platforms.

David is actively involved in the musical theatre industry in South Africa, and has performed with High School Musical, Jersey Boys, Dream Girls, Dirty Dancing, Man and the Mouse, My Favorite Things, Simply Broadway and Chicago. He has also performed as a keyboard player for the television series Strictly Come Dancing (2014 & 2015), Dancing With The Stars (2018) and The Voice South Africa (2018/19).

In addition to his active performing and arranging career, David lectures improvisation, jazz piano and ensemble studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he completed his master’s degree (awarded with distinction).

David is not only a solo musician but offers duo, trio, quartet and quintet set-ups, (featuring upright bassists, vocalists, saxophonists and other instruments) to suit your event’s needs.
