About David Grier

A Chef by profession and a Humanitarian by passion. Extreme Adventurer, Bestselling Author, and Inspirational Speaker.

After studying management at the hotel school in Gauteng, David started his career in the hospitality industry. A year later David opened his first string of successful restaurants, running them from the engine room, the kitchen. A challenge never put David off rising through the field, his restaurant became ranked in the top 100 in the country and remained there.

David has spent a lot of time abroad, promoting South African food as well as starting a manufacturing company producing food products for the international markets. This has culminated in his appearance in many cooking shows and food related programs. With adventure being the focus of his life now, David has remained attached to the food industry through his consulting company where he remodels restaurants and hotels in line with current food trends.

Not only a chef, David is fuelled by a passion to make a difference in the lives of children born with clefts and in need of life changing corrective surgery, David turned to extreme adventurism to create awareness and raise funds for this cause and assist with their corrective surgery through the Miles for Smiles initiative.

David has become the first person to have run the length of the Great Wall of China in both directions (4200 km in each direction), and since then has gone on to 6 more arduous, breath-taking adventures, each one adding to his life’s lessons which have now been crafted into a talk: “Back to the Wall”. 4 of the journeys have been captured in coffee table books that David has written.

He has run The Great Wall of China West to East (4200 km in 93 days) in 2006 and then again in 2019 East to West in 78 days, the entire coastline of South Africa (3300 km in 80 days), paddled from Africa to Madagascar (500 km in 12 days), ran the Island of Madagascar (South to North; 2700 km in 67 days), the length of India North to South in 93 days, 4008 km. Thailand 1000 km in 20 days. Cuba 2300 km in 38 days, down the length of the UK (from John O’Groats to Lands’ End); from South to North in Ireland, followed by a run along Hadrian’s Wall. Plus running a marathon in North Korea, Pangyong and the coastline of Portugal and Madeira.

To date David has run over 30-000 km for the Miles for Smiles initiative.

They are at it again- “Miles for Smiles”.

David, together with his running/adventuring partner, Andrew Stuart, are once again hitting the road in 2024, they will be part of a running event along Route 50 in the USA. An estimated total distance of 2 000kms, all in aid of raising funds to build Hope Lodges that supply free accommodation for Cancer patients while undergoing treatment: 24th march to the 2nd June 2024.
