The Hanepoot Brass Band is a vibrant and distinctive South African brass ensemble that seamlessly blends the high-energy spirit of a New Orleans–style brass band with the rich, indigenous jazz traditions of South Africa. Deeply rooted in the Cape Town goema sound, the band offers audiences a fresh yet authentic musical experience that is both celebratory and deeply cultural.
Formed in 2019 by acclaimed trombonist, composer, arranger, and bandleader Jannie “Hanepoot” van Tonder, the band is an acoustic powerhouse featuring six horns and a dynamic two-piece rhythm section. Each performance showcases the warmth and immediacy of acoustic brass, allowing the band’s intricate arrangements and spontaneous improvisations to shine.
The ensemble brings together some of Cape Town’s most respected professional musicians, all of whom have strong backgrounds as educators and contributors to community-based cultural projects. The lineup includes Jannie Hanepoot (Trombone), Carlton Adams (Trumpet), Siraaj Allen (Trumpet), Simon Bates (Tenor Sax), Duncan Johnson (Baritone Sax), Zhaun Gorridon (Sousaphone), Nick Turner (Banjo), and Carlo Fabe (Percussion). This collective depth of experience translates into performances that are both technically refined and emotionally engaging.
