About Mpumi Mlambo
Mpumi “Msakazi” Mlambo’s journey into radio began as a simple hobby, but nearly a decade later, it has evolved into a thriving career in broadcasting. She describes herself as the “voice of reason” and an advocate for nurturing new talent. Currently, she is the fresh morning voice on Metro FM’s Hustler’s Fix, airing weekdays from 2am to 5am.
Her early days in radio trace back to her time at Wits University, where she hosted on the Voice of Wits station for two years. Her talent was recognized early on when she won an award as a show host—an achievement that came as a surprise because she initially saw radio as just a fun pastime rather than a serious pursuit. She recalls being a kid who loved radio, viewing it as her playground and passion. The award motivated her to take her broadcasting ambitions more seriously, leading her to pursue her studies at Wits with radio in mind as her primary goal.
After graduating, Mlambo faced challenges in securing radio employment. Her attempts to break into the industry through submissions to 5FM and YFM went unanswered, but she persisted. Her break came when PowerFM offered her an opportunity—becoming the youngest staff member at the station. She worked hard, producing content for daytime and weekend shows, determined to develop her skills and make her mark. Her motivation was strengthened by her family's history, with her parents growing up during apartheid and working under difficult conditions. She felt it was her duty to forge her path in the entertainment industry and make a difference.
Today, she is the familiar voice delivering the morning “fix” on Metro FM. She credits her colleagues, such as Mo Flava, MoG, and Naked DJ, for welcoming her and helping her learn the station’s operations. Her journey from cleaning her mother’s home in Orange Farm to hosting a national radio show highlights her dedication and resilience. With seven years at PowerFM, she focused on giving a platform to emerging artists often overlooked by other stations.
