The Blue Gum Jazz Band is a dynamic, five-piece ensemble, rooted in the heart of KwaThema, Gauteng. Formed in 2012, the band has grown from humble beginnings into a celebrated name in South Africa’s jazz scene, known for their soulful performances, genre versatility, and deep connection with audiences.
The band was born out of passion for smooth jazz and a desire to create a space for musical expression. It all began with monthly jazz sessions at Kutlwano Jazz Club, held every first Sunday of the month. Dumisani Matanga, the band’s founder and music director, would invite fellow musicians and vocalists to join him in these intimate gatherings. The name “Blue Gum” emerged spontaneously when the group needed a name to submit a performance video to a local pub—and it stuck. Since then, the Blue Gum Jazz Band has become synonymous with heartfelt, soul-infused jazz.
