Grammy award winner Tyla Laura Seethal was born 30 January 2002, she is a South African singer who was born and raised in Johannesburg. into a ‘coloured’ family of Zulu, Indian, Mauritian and Irish descent.

She attended Edenglen High School in 2019 and was the school's head of culture in that year. While at school, she had begun posting original songs and covers to her Instagram account, as well as sending them out to a number of figures in the music industry.

She was subsequently discovered by her first manager, Garth von Glehn, who then organized her first recording sessions. She was studying towards a degree in mining engineering before she decided to commit to her music career full time.

She rose to international fame with her 2023 single "Water", which was a top ten hit in a dozen countries including the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.

In Sweden, she played the song live on The Bianca Show, and in the US, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. On October 6, 2023, the accompanying music video was published. In just three days, it had 3 million views on YouTube.

Tyla won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance for her song "Water" at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in February 2024. She also became the youngest African musician to receive a Grammy Award.
